Guiding Question 4.3.1: What is your score on efficiency? If the efficiency is high/low, what went right/wrong?
Our score on efficiency was 115 which was average.
What went well was that the bridge could hold weights up to 50 kg while it was not able to withstand weights that were larger than 50 kg. This could be because of the fact that we did not enhance the center of the bridge which is also the location of the center of gravity.
When weights were placed, the center of the bridge could not support the downward force that was acting on it, causing stress and tension on the ice cream sticks and caused our bridge to snap as a result.
Guiding Question 4.3.2: Which part of the bridge gave was first? Explain using Physics or Engineering concepts.
The part of the bridge that gave way first, as mentioned above, was the center portion of the bridge.
The amount of gravitational force is proportional to the weight of the objects
The equation for gravitational force is
F represents the Gravitational force
G represents the Gravitational field strength
M1 represents the mass of the first object
M2 represents the mass of the second object
r^2 represents the distance between the objects.
There are many variables in the equation that were constant during our experiment.
Firstly, G or gravitational field strength was constant as the experiment was conducted on earth
Secondly, the Mass of the second object, M2, was constant as the mass of our bridge did not change during testing.
Thirdly, the distance between object 1 (the weights) and object 2 (the bridge) did not change and was always constant.
Thus, in order for the downward force acting on the bridge to larger, the mass of the weights must increase.
Our bridge was not able to support the increase from 50kg to 60kg. Thus it gave way.
This could be due to the force that was acting on the bridge, causing the ice creams sticks stress and causing the bridge to break.
We could have enhanced the middle section more to prevent the bridge from giving way as the forces acting on the ice creams sticks will be more evenly distributed.
Guiding Question 4.3.3: Which part of the bridge provided the most strength in the test process? Explain using physics or engineering concepts.
The part the provided the most strength would be the supports at the end of the bridge. This is because they did not suffer as much damage as the base of the bridge.
Even though the weights were mainly concentrated on one point (in this case, the center of the bridge), the supports suffered the less damage. They are the strongest because the weights of the bridge also causes stress on the supports, yet they suffered the least damage
